الكتاب استخرجه، ورتبه، وترجم له، وضبط متنه عبد السلام بن محمد بن عمر علوش. يحتوي هذا الكتاب على مرويّات وأحاديث الحافظ "ابن سعد" التي يتحدث فيها عن سنن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وأيامه. أما مادة الكتاب فيه من إعداد "عبد السلام بن عمر علو" وهدفه من جمع هذه الأحاديث هو اطلاع القارئ على فوائدها وموادها، وعناصرها، وكذلك على ما حوته من الأحكام الشرعية والسيرة المرضية والتفاسير القرآنية، ولتحقيق غايته المرجوة من هذا الجمع عني بإثبات هذه الأحاديث، بأسانيد مؤلفها، وما قد يلحقه بها (الأحاديث) من كلام على بعض الرواة-وهي الجارح والعدّل في هذا الفن-أو اختلاف ألفاظهم وزياداتهم. أما ترتيبه لمادة الكتاب فكانت وفقاً لما سار عليه أصحاب السنن، ولذلك ابتدأ بكتاب الطهارة، ثم الصلاة، فالجنائز، فالزكاة، فالصوم، الحج، وهكذا حتى كان فراغه من كتاب الفضائل.
