الجميل، على الجملة، هو ما بعث في نفسك عاطفة الرضا والإعجاب معاً، فكل ما استهوى قلبك، وآثار حسك، وحرّك دهشك، مع رضاك وإعجابك فهو جميل. وقد اختلف نظر الناس إلى الجميل لاختلاف الشعور والإحساس، لأنه أمر مرجعه إلى الأذواق تتباين بتباين درجة الحضارة والبيئة. على أن هناك خطوطاً عامة، يلفها التناسق والانسجام والاعتدال، أجمع الناس عليها فاتخذوها مقاييس يقيسون الجمال بها وينسبونه إليها.
وكان من اختلاف الناس على الجميل، لاختلاف الأذواق والحضارات والبيئات، أن اختلفوا على جمال المرأة. فمنهم من رأى الجمال في البدينة التي امتلأت لحماً وطبقت شحماً, ومنهم من رآه في الدقيقة كالعود. ومنهم من أبصره في المجدولة التي بين الهزل والسمن. ومنهم من أبصره في اللحم دون مراعاة الروح، أو في الروح دون مراعاة اللحم، أو في كليهما معاً.
ويهدف هذا الكتاب لبيان نظرة العرب إلى جمال المرأة وذلك من خلال تتبع ما قالته العرب من الشعر في وصف جمال المرأة على اختلاف العصور والبلدان بدءاً من العصر الجاهلي وانتهاءً بالحضارة الأندلسية.
