السؤال الأول الذي يتبادر إلى ذهن القارئ لرواية "غائب عن العشاء الأخير" للكاتب السوري أيمن مارديني هو علاقة بنية الرواية بخطابها، وصوت الراوي بما يروي عنه، وإذ يعمد الروائي إلى إلقاء مشهد يجمع بين الشهوة والقتل بين نهى وراشد كعينة إختبارية يتفحص من خلالها تأثير مادته الروائية على المتلقي، فإن صوت الراوي يعمل على تقطير الحكاية وتقطيعها وجعلها جزءاً من سياق الحكاية الشخصية للراوي.
إن هذا الأسلوب في السرد، وإلتصاق الراوي بالمروي عنه، أراد منه مارديني إستقطاب إهتمام القارئ وإستثارته وتعليق حواسه وربطها بما يرويه له الراوي "تجلس نهى إلى طاولة الكتابة... تمسك بالقلم الأول أمامها... وتكتب الكلمات الأولى: روائي خان روايته وأشخاصه وحكايتهم التي لم تنته بعد، وعليّ أنا إحدى شخصياته، أن أكمل ما بدأه... تتوقف... تتذكر أن تشعل سيجارة ثانية، وتمسك بالقلم، روائي مريض، وعجز في لحظة ما عن إكمال ما بدأه في الرواية، وعلي أن إحدى شخصياته أن أكمل... أن أضع النهاية، العبرة، الهدف، من هذا الكتاب، ولكن...".
وهكذا يبدو العالم الروائي مقسوم بين الروائي وشخصياته، كلاهما يرويان، والحوار مفتوح على مدار العمل بكامله، وما على المتلقي إلا بذل المزيد من الجهد، لحل عُرى الحبكة القصصية التي انشبكت منذ الصفحات الأولى للرواية وحتى آخر سطورها "لتكمل ما هو محقق، وحقيقي إذ لا شيء حقيقي هنا سوى الغياب".
