في كلمته لتقديم هذا الكتاب كتب سامر أبو شريف الشهيد، عن غسان كنفاني الشهيد: "أنت علمتنا كيف يكون الحزن الكبير، كيف يكون الحزن من الداخل، عنيفاً، عميقاً في القلب وفي الشرايين، علمتنا وأنت تتحدث عن رفاقك الشهداء، ألا نحس بغيابهم، لأن نهايتهم الجسدية تعني بداية طريقهم التي اختاروها ... الموت .. رفيقك هذا الآخر الذي كنت تتحدث عنه في ألفة ... الموت الكبير الذي أبيت إلا أن تكونه ...".
في هذا الكتاب يجول بسام أبو شريف في حياة غسان كنفاني، الأمثولة والرمز، لكل عربي، دافع، ولا يزال عن وطنه، يبدأ بسرد حياته منذ النشأة مروراً بحياته العائلية والأدبية والنضالية وانتهاءً بالإستشهاد.
يضم الكتاب مقالات عمرها من عمر الشهيد ومقابلات ورسائل وتفاصيل عديدة، تعرّف القارىء من هو غسان كنفاني، والدور المهم جداً والتاريخي الذي أدّاه منذ سني شبابه الأولى، مفكراً وقائداً سياسياً، كما تُعرّف القارىء على أهم أعماله الأدبية من قصص ومسرحيات وبحوث أدبية ومؤلفات سياسية، عالج فيها الشهيد جوانب معينة في تاريخ النضال السياسي وحركة التحرر الوطني العربية في بداياتها.
وكان المشهد الأخير: "استشهد صباح السبت في 8/7/1972 بانفجار عبوة ناسفة كانت قد وضعت في سيارته تحت منزله، ما أدى إلى استشهاده مع إبنة شقيقته لميس حسين نجم (17 سنة) " وكان هذا الكتاب تحية لروح الشهيد.
