لقد اهتم العلماء بالذئب، فجاءت الكتب العلمية فيه متفرقة، بعضها اختصّ بالتراث الشعبي والأسطوري، وبعضها حكى قصصاً عنه، وتشتت المعارف العلمية في تكوينه وعلاقته بالمجتمعات البشرية قديمة وحديثه، وركزت معظمها على طبيعة الذئب وسلوكه.
وجاء هذا الكتاب ليستخلص كل ذلك، ويعرض ما في الأدب العربي عليه، فكان كتاباً جامعاً، مفصلاً، يتناول أبسط الجزئيات هنا وهناك، فيربطها جميعاً، لنقرأ كتاباً واحداً شاملاً عن الذئب وفق ما توصَّلت إليه الخبرة الإنسانية، ووفق ما جاء به أدب العرب على مَرِّ التاريخ.
وقد قسّم الكتاب إلى ستة فصول توزعت على النحو التالي: الفصل الأول: "أنواع الذئاب وصفاتها"، الفصل الثاني: "طبيعة الذئب وحالاته الخاصة"، الفصل الثالث: "الذئب والإنسان"، الفصل الرابع: "علاقة الذئب بالحيوانات"، الفصل الخامس: "علاقة الذئب بالطيور والحشرات والأسماك والطبيعة".
