درج المسلمون في مشارق الأرض ومغاربها على الاحتفال بالمولد النبوي الشريف حباً بالنبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، وإحياء لذكراه العطرة، وطلباً لثواب الله ورضوانه. وكان أول من أحدث ذلك في الإسلام الملك المظفر أبو سعيد كوكبري بن بكتكين صاحب إربل في أوائل القرن السابع للهجرة، فاستحسن ذلك العمل عدد من العلماء وأهل الحديث والتصوف، كالحافظ ابن حجر العسقلاني والحافظ جلال الدين السيوطي وغيرهم، لما يتخلله من قراءة للقرآن الكريم، وصلاة على النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، وإبراز لفضائله وأخلاقه الكريمة.
وهذا ما حفز العديد من العلماء على تأليف مصنفات في المولد النبوي الشريف تشتمل على مقتطفات من سيرة الرسول الكريم صلى الله عليه وسلم، وقصائد شعرية في مدحه والتغني بصفاته وشمائله، وما خص به من معجزات وكرامات، مما يسر للمسلمين مادة سهلة يقرأونها ليس فقط في الذكرى السنوية لميلاد النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، وإنما في كل مناسبة كريمة يريدون التقرب بها إلى الله.
وكتاب ابن الجوزي الذي بين يدينا يدخل ضمن الكتب المصنفة في هذا الإطار حيث ضمته قصائد تروي سيرة النبي المصطفى صلى الله عليه وسلم، وأخرى تمتدحه وثالثة تتغنى بصفاته وشمائله... وبالنظر لأهمية هذا الكتاب فقد اعتنى "صلاح الدين الهواري" بتحقيقه حيث اعتنى أولاً: بتصديره بمقدمة تشتمل على تعريف بالمولد النبوي الشريف، ومشروعيته، وأدلة جوازه. ثانياً: دون ترجمة موجزة لصاحب المولد تتضمن نبذة من سيرته ومنزلته وآثاره. ثالثاً: ضبط وشرح ما غمض من مفردات هذا المصنف، بالرجوع إلى المعاجم اللغوية والكتب المختصة، رابعاً: ضبط القصائد الواردة في مدح الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم، وشرحها، والتأكد من سلامتها اللغوية والعروضية، خامساً: رصد ما يقع في دائرة المبالغة والخطأ من تعابير وأوصاف، وتحذير القراء منها أو حذفها.
