اعلموا إخواني وفقكم الله: أن الله عز وجل فضل محمداً صلي الله عليه وسلم علي سائر الخلق، وقدم أمته علي جميع الأمم، وجعل سبب التفضيل العلم والعمل به، فمن سبر حال نبينا عليه السلام علم فضله علي جميع الأنبياء في العلم والعمل، ومن نظر في علوم أمتنا رأى من علوم علمائهم ما يعجز عنه الأحبار، ومن عبادة متعبديهم ما يقصر عنه الرهبان. ولا ينظر إلي صورة الترهبن، فإن التعبد بموافقة المشروع ومخالفة الهوى أشد وأعظم. فالعلم والعمل بحمد الله في أمتنا فاش كثير غير أننى بحثت عن نائلى مرتبة الكمال في الأمرين أعنى- العلم والعمل- من التابعين ومن بعدهم، فلم أجد من تم له الأمران علي الغاية الى لا يخدش وجه كمالها نوع نقص، سوى ثلاثة أشخاص: الحسن البصرى، وسفيان الثورى، وأحمد بن حنبل. وقد جمعت كتاباً يحوى مناقب الحسن، وكتاباً يجمع فضائل سفيان، ثم رأيت أحمد بن حنبل أولى بذلك منهما لأنه جمع من العلوم ما لم يجمعا، وحمل من الصبر علي إقامة الحق ما لم يحملا، وإني رأيت جماعة قد جمعوا مناقبه فمنهم من قصر فيما نقل، ومنهم من لم يرتب ما حصل، فرأيت أن أصرف بعض زمنى إلي تهذيب كتاب يشتمل علي مناقبه وآدابه، ليعرف المقتدى قدر من اقتدى به، والله الموفق.
