لما كانت الكتب عظيمة الفائدة، شديدة الأهمية، تكاثرت الأسئلة والاستفتاءات التي توجه للعلماء والمفتين، في السؤال عن أفضل الكتب، والسؤال عن حال بعض الكتب، والسؤال عن نسبة بعض الكتب لمصنفيها، والسؤال عن بعض الأحكام الفقهية الخاصة بالكتب، ولما كان ذلك كذلك، رأي المؤلف "عبد الإله بن عثمان الشايع" أن يجمع هذا الكتاب. ويسميه (فتاوى عن الكتب) وضمنه ردوداً عن أسئلة وردت لبعض العلماء وهي تدور حول كتب مدحها العلماء، وكتب حذر منها العلماء، كتب تكلم العلماء على نسبتها لبعض المصنفين، كتب تكلم العلماء على محتواها ومناهجها.
