عندما نقارن بين ما ألف حول السرد، وما ألف، حول الشعر فإنه ليس بوسع الباحث إلا أن يسجل "الضيم"الذي لحق بالسرد، من أكثر الكتب التي تعنى بتاريخ الشعر العربي! أما لسرد فلا أحد اهتم بتتبع مراحله وإبراز أساليبه، بل من المرجح أنه لم يخطر لباحث ببال أن يكتب تاريخاً للسرد. صحيح أن هناك محاولات في هذا الميدان، لكنها تصب اهتمامها على السرد "الأدبي" انطلاقاً من مفهوم ضيق للأدب، يتناول الباحث أصنافاً معينة من السرد، ويقصي أصنافا أخرى لا يعتبرها أدبية.
إن دراسة السرد لن تتقدم ما دام الجري مستمراً وراء "التخصص"، وما دام العديد من الباحثين لم يفطنوا إلى أن ميدان اهتمامهم ينبغي أن يكون السرد العربي بمختلف فنونه مظاهره. إن الحواجز الموضوعة بين الأنواع لها ما يبررها، ولكنها تظل نسبية، فهناك خيوط كثيرة تشد الأنواع فيما بينها وعلة عدة مستويات، بحيث لا يجوز لمن يدرس "ألف ليلة وليلة"، مثلاً، أن يتجاهل تاريخ الطبري ورحلة أبن بطوطة وكتب التراجم.
والباحث في دراسته التي جاءت حول السرد والتأويل في هذا الكتاب، لا يدعى بحال من الأحوال، أنه طبق البرنامج المشار إليه، كل ما في الأمر أنه تناول "قراءة" سنة نصوص سردية، البعض فيها في "الأدب" والآخر في "الترجمة"، ذاهباً إلى أن كتاب "أسرار البلاغة" يروي حكاية من الحكايات.
