من خلال دراسة التاريخ يتبين لنا أمر مهمّ وهو معرفة مصداقية الخواص في اللحظة الحسّاسة التي تؤدّي إلى انحراف مسيرة التاريخ أو استقامته، إن دراسة الحوادث التاريخية وأخذ العبرة والتجربة منها خير سبيل للناس الواعين كي يتعرفوا على وظائفهم وواجباتهم في المستقبل ويأخذوا عبرة من تلك التجارب ويمنعوا تكرارها. فعلى الخواص أن لا ينشغلوا في اللحظات الحساسة والمصيرية بالمطامح الدنيوية. ويقول السيد الخامنئي: "بحثنا في مسألة الخواص يكون على جانبين الأول الجانب التاريخي للخواص والذي يشمل: من هم الخواص؟ وما هي أسماؤهم. والثاني ما يجب على الخواص القيام به في أي مرحلة من مراحل التاريخ، وبمعنى آخر الخواص الذين لا يخضعون في اللحظات المصيرية إلى قيود حبّ الدنيا".
والكتاب الذي بين أيدينا يبحث في القسم الأول من كلام السيد آية الله الخامنئي، وهو معرفة الخواص الذين حددوا مسار التاريخ بمواقفهم السياسية في خضم أحداث صدر الإسلام برزت إلى الوجود نخبة من الرجال الأوفياء للرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم وأصبحوا مصباح هداية للبشر جمعاء. ومن هذه النخبة كان الأئمة المعصومون وأصحابهم النجباء.
