تأتي أهمية مهنة الطب، حيث تتعلق بمقصدٍ عظيمٍ من مقاصد الشرع، وهو حفظ النفس، ويُعتبر هذا المقصد مشترّكاً إنسانياً عاماً لا يختلف أحد على أهميته، وأهمية هذه المهنة ونبل القائمين عليها، مهما كان جنسهم ودينهم وفلسفتهم للحياة الإنسانية.
إن مهنة الطب لها شرفها وقدسيتها، وهي مهنة أخلاقية وعلمية قديمة قدم الإنسان، أكسبتها الحقب المتعاقبة تقاليد ومواصفات تحتم على من يمارسها أن يحترم الشخصية الإنسانية، وأن يكون قدوة حسنة في سلوكه ومعاملته، مستقيماً في عمله، يحافظ على أرواح الناس وأعراضهم.
ومن هنا، تأتي أهمية هذا البحث: في بيان "العلاقة ما بين الطبيب والمريض، بأنها علاقة إنسانية، وقانونية تحتم على الطبيب الإهتمام بالمريض وبذل العناية التي تقتضيها أصول مهنة الطب، وإلتزام الطبيب في هذا المجال هو إلتزام ببذل عناية والإهتمام بتقديم العلاج المناسب للمريض، وبيان أنه قد أصبح من الممكن مساءلة الأطباء عن الأخطاء التي تصدر عنهم أثناء مزاولتهم لمهنة الطب وخاصة عندما أصبح الأطباء ملزمين بضمان السلامة للمريض وعدم تعرضه للخطر.
ولقد حاول الكاتب وضع خطة للبحث، أوضح من خلالها مفهوم المسؤولية الطبية، بأسلوب ميسر ومبسط، لعل من يقرأ هذا الكتاب يصل إلى الهدف منه، والإستفادة من معلوماته، ويكون عوناً للأطباء لمعرفة واجباتهم المهنية، ونشر ثقافة عامة تبين حقوق المرضى، والعمل على المطالبة بها.
