Book Description
المتحجرات هي البقايا الصلبة للحيوانات والنباتات أو الآثار التي تركتها، وتوجد المتحجرات في الصخور فقط... ويعود السبب في هذا إلى أن تلك الحيوانات والنبتات قبل أن تتحجر، تعطي بالطين أو الرمل، بعد هلاكها أو سقوطها... وبعد مرور ملايين السنين، يتحول ذلك الطين أو الرمل إلى حجارة صلبة... ومن أشهر الصخور أو الحجارة، التي توجد فيها المتحجرات، الصخور الكلسية والطينية والطباشيرية، المكونة جزئياً، أعني الصخور، من قواقع صغيرة جداً، غطست في أعماق البحار.
والمتحجرات توجد بين طيات الصخور التي ذكرناها، وكثيراً ما يعثر على متحجرات كاملة تماماً، بل عثر أحياناً على متحجرات لحيوانات بلحمها وشعرها، كما هي الحال في "الماموث" المنقرض. كما أن المتحجرات المحفوظة في الكهربان، كالنمل والخنافس، تبدو وكأنها تنبض بالحياة!
ومميزة الكتاب الذي بين يدينا أنه قد جاء عارضاً لصور عدد كبير من المتحجرات القديمة والنادرة، كما ضم تعريفات ببعض الأنواع وتاريخ اكتشافها إذا أمكن له ذلك.
