على الرغم من أن رواية "خطيب الضيعة" كتبت في الربع الأول من القرن العشرين، فإن كاتبها يوسف حبشي الأشقر، عرف كيف يجعلها سجلاً حافلاً لتاريخ لبنان السياسي – الإجتماعي والذي يرصد من خلالها الصراع الخفي والمعلن بين سلطة المال وسلطة الدين، ويفعل ذلك من خلال الصراع على الإنتخابات بين "أسعد" الذي هو أغنى الأغنياء في "كفرملاّت" وبين "فرسان" خطيب الضيعة الذي لا يملك أن يقدم للناس سوى "سبّحوا الرب يا جميع الشعوب" ، "صلاتك معنا" ، "ملائكة السما محيطة معنا بمائدة المذبح" . لم يضجر من قولها منذ ثلاثين سنة إلا في مواسم الإنتخابات، فــ لله ضريبة يجب أن يؤديها، وهو يؤديها بطيبة خاطر، وليس الكاهن بأدق منه في تقديم واجبات القداسة والتقديس، ولأن الإنجيل المقدس يقول "إن خطيب الضيعة لا يُشرى ولا يُباع" رفض "فرسان" أن يبيع صوته وينسحب من الإنتخابات على الرغم من وضعه الذي لا يُحسد عليه "ضرب بيده المال الذي على الطاولة، فانتثرت أوراقه في حضن نوفل وعلى الأرض، وتطلع إلى السقف وصوّب إصبعه إلى الباب وقال: - اعطني عرض كتافك انقبر من وجهي ! ...".
هذه الوقائع، كُتبت بلغة روائية سلسة، تقترب من العامية / المحلية، تؤثر البساطة ولا تسقط في التعقيد، تسمّي الأشياء بأسمائها وتبتعد عن مواربة الأدب وتورياته، استوحى الكاتب مادتها من تاريخ بلاده الإجتماعي، وأعاد صياغته بفنية الروائي الخبير ...
