يتوجه هذا الكتاب لطالب الدراسات العليا وذلك ليساعده في إعداد رسالته ولطالب الدراسة الجامعية في إعداد مشروع تخرجه، وإلى جميع العاملين والمهتمين بالبحث العلمي.
وينقسم متن الكتاب إلى خمسة أبواب إذ تناول الباب الأول البحث العلمي، أهميته، دوافعه، أنواع البحوث العلمية وأقسامها ومواصفات البحث الجيد. أما الباب الثاني فقد تطرق إلى الطريقة العلمية والمنهج خصائصها، أهميتها، خطواتها والعوامل المؤثرة في بناء المنهج.
أما الباب الثالث فقد تطرق إلى مناهج البحث في التربية البدنية والرياضية متناولاً بذلك ثلاثة مناهج أساسية في المجال الرياضي. المنهج الوصفي والتجريبي والتاريخي، متطرقاً بذلك إلى مفهوم وأهداف وأسس كل منهج منها.
أما الباب الرابع فقد سعى لتحديد العينة وأساليب جمع البيانات في بحوث التربية الرياضية متناولاً بذلك أنواع العينات ووسائل جمع البيانات هنا وقد ختمت الكتاب بالباب الخامس والذي كان الهدف المنشود للكتاب وهو إعداد الرسالة الجامعية متطرقاً بذلك إلى اختيار الموضوع وهيكل الرسالة ومرحلة كتابة متن البحث متناولاً بذلك عناصر الرسالة الناجحة وطريقة الاقتباس وكتابة الهوامش ثم ترتيب قائمة المراجع وأخيراً الاستعداد للمناقشة.
