ولابد من الإشارة هنا إلى أن علم مناهج البحث لا يقتصر فقط على دراسة المنهجين الأكثر شهرة في مجال البحث العلمي، وهما المنهج الاستنباطي والمنهج الاستقرائي، وإنما يتضمن أيضاً دراسة المناهج المستخدمة في العلوم المختلفة، مثل المنهج التاريخي والمنهج الوصفي والمنهج الجدلي وما إلى ذلك من المناهج التي تتعدد بتعدد العلوم.
وطبقاً لذلك، فإنه يكون من الواضح أن علم مناهج البحث الذي يهتم بالخطوات التي يسلكها العالم في بحثه أو مشروعه العلمي، والذي يهتم أيضاً بدقة الاستدلالات التي يقوم بها، هو جزء من فلسفة العلم التي يقوم بتحليل مناهج العلم وتحليل قضاياه ومفاهيمه.
