كانط هو صاحب كتاب "نحو السلام الدائم" وفيه قدم أفكاراً فلسفية أخصيت أبحاث العاملين من أجل السلام في العالم، طيلة قرنين من الزمن، حيث اهتم فيه بإدراج التطبيق العملي للنظرية السياسية التي وصفها في كتابه الشهير (الأصول الميتافيزيقية لفلسفة الحق). كما ووضح رأيه في السلام الدائم حيث كان يعتبر أن السلام الدائم والشامل هو بمثابة ثمرة النهج القانوني، وأنه انتقال تدريجي من حال الطبيعة إلى الحال القانونية على صعيد الدولة الداخلي، أولاً، ثم على صعيد العلاقات بين الدول.
وقلما يجد القارئ صفحة من صفحات هذا الكتاب إلا ويبرز فيها "كانط" التعارض بين الحال الطبيعية والحال القانونية، أو يشير فيها المؤلف إلى نوع من العقد الأصلي، أو يذكر فكرة الإرادة العامة الخ فكيف يصور كانط الحال الطبيعية والعقد الأصلي الذي أتاح للبشر الخروج من تلك الحال؟ بعض النصوص من كتابه (فلسفة الحق) تفيد أن الحال الطبيعية، بنظره هي حال اجتماعية. لكن كتاباته السابقة توحي بأن فيلسوفنا كان في فترة من الفترات يعتقد بإمكانية، بل بحقيقة أن الحال الطبيعية كانت لا اجتماعية، بمعنى أنه يعتقد أن الطبيعة لا تخلق الإنسان من أجل المجتمع، إنما الهدف الأوحد الذي تحدده لرغباته ولجهوده هو الحفاظ على بساطة الحال البدائية.
