إن كتاب الإبدال الذين صنفه أبو الطيب اللغوي والذي أتم نشره المجمع العلمي العربي اليوم، كان يقتضي صدق تحقيقه الإطلاع على جمع ما ألف أو كتب في الإبدال، ومن كتبه (الإبدال والمعاقبة والنظائر) لأبي القاسم عبد الرحمن الزجاجي (337هـ)، ومنه نسخة نادرة في الاستانة صورها معهد المخطوطات بجامعة الدول العربية.
وميزة هذا الكتاب على إيجازه أنه فيه من حروف الإبدال ما ليس في غيره، ولقلما أغنى كتاب عن كتاب. ولعل المنصف على عادته في التصنيف للمبتدئين والمتوسطين والمتقدمين في طلب العلم، قد الف هذا الوجيز للمبتدئين بدرس الإبدال. وحرص كل الحرص على الإيجاز ليسهل على طالب اللغة المبتدئ حفظه، ومن أجل ذلك حذف كثيراً من الشواهد، واقتصر على حروف الإبدال نذكر على سبيل المثال هذين البدلين أو النظيرين: (ظأب وظأم) في إبداله.
