تنوعت وسائل الإعلام في عصرنا الحاضر، فأصبح منها المطبوعة (الصحف، والمجلات، والدوريات، والكتب، والنشرات، والكتيبات، واللافتات، والملصقات)، والسمعية (الإذاعة، والتسجيلات الصوتية المختلفة والتي تعتمد على عنصر الصوت وحده)، والسمعية والبصرية (السينما، والتلفزيون)، والوسائط المتعددة Multimedia، مثل الإنترنت، التي تجمع الوسائل المكتوبة والمسموعة والمرئية.
ومن بين كل هذه الوسائل فإن الصحافة هي التي أطلق عليها تعبير "السلطة الرابعة"، بعد السلطات الثلاث، التشريعية، والقضائية، والتنفيذية، أما الأدبيات العربية فأطلقت عليها "صاحبة الجلالة".
والصحيفة تتفوق على وسائل الأعلام الأخرى من حيث أنها تعطى القارئ حرية كاملة في إختيار الوقت المناسب لقراءتها، كما أن القارئ يمكنه إعادة أو مراجعة ما قرأ في أي وقت يشاء، لذلك كانت المطبوعات بوجه عام من أصلح الوسائل لنشر الموضوعات والدراسات المعقدة والمتشعبة.
ومن ضمن إهتمامات الصحافة الشؤون العسكرية، حيث حرص الصحفيون على نقل أخبار الحروب وتطوراتها، وذلك في القرنين السادس عشر والسابع عشر الميلاديين، بهدف إشباع نهم القراء لمعرفة تفاصيل الحروب، وتطور سيرها، ونتائجها.
وكان هذا بديهياً في ظل عدم توفر أي وسائل إعلامية أخرى آنذاك، ولهذا كانت الصحف ترى في نشر أخبار الحروب وتفاصيلها رواجاً لها.
