يضم هذا الكتاب أربع دراسات سياسية هامة للأستاذ "أبيل ألير" المحامي والسياسي المعروف. الدراسة الأولى ألقيت في عام 1970، في عهد كان فيه "ابيل ألير" وزيراً في أول حكومة شكلت بعد ثورة مايو 1969، ونشرت ضمن دراسات أخرى باللغة الإنجليزية في كتاب بعنوان "الجنوب" كما كانت النواة للكتاب الضخم الذي ألفه ونشره باللغة الإنجليزية عن مشكلة الجنوب في 1990. وفيها ألقى المحاضر أضواء على المشاكل التي واجهت الإقليم الجنوبي في الفترة التي خطي فيها بالسلاح منذ 1972 وحتى 1983.
أما الدراسة الرابعة فهي خلاصة التجارب الطويلة المريرة للمؤلف خلال نضاله وصراعه المستمر في سبيل إرساء دعائم الوحدة الوطنية وتحقيق السلام من أجل مصلحة كل إنسان في السودان، دون تفرقة أو تمييز بسبب اللون أو الجنس أو العقيدة أو الثقافة، أو غير ذلك من الأسباب التي يصطفها الفرد أو الدولة في كل أرجاء العالم، لكي يخطى بالثراء والسعادة والعيش الرغيد وحده على حساب غير من الأفراد والدول.
