كتاب "المباحث المشرقية" من أهم كتب الرازي التي تمثل مرحلة من مراحل نضوجه الفلسفي والعقلي، فقد ألفه في فترة مبكرة من حياته. فواكب شبابه في عنصر التحدي وإثبات القدرة، وكأن الرازي يريد أن يطوع الفلسفة التي وصلت إليه عن طريق من قبله كابن سينا والفارابي. ولذا فإن أسلوب الرازي في هذا الكتاب ليس بسيطاً يعتمد على التفريع والتقسيم، والتحليل والبرهنة، وافتراض الشبه والرد عليها. ولذلك السبب فإن أسلوب الكتاب أسلوب فلسفي منطقي بحت.
فمثلاً قوله في الكتاب الأول "في الأمور العامة": وأما بيان أنه -أي الوجود- أول الأوائل في التصورات فقد قيل فيه: بأنه أعم جزء للأخص والعلم بالكل متوقف على العلم بالجزء والذي يحتاج العلم بالشيء إلى العلم به يكون لا محالة أعرف وهذا ضعيف... فاعلم أن الخصم له في هذه المسألة مقامات: (أحدهما): أن يقول ماهية الوجود غير متصورة والثاني أن يقول ماهية الوجود وإن كانت متصورة إلا أن التصور غير أولي بل مكتسب. أما المقام الأول فله أن يقرر ذلك بوجوه أربعة... الخ".
فصار القارئ يحتاج إلى تأمل عميق في عبارات الرازي ليتابع أفكاره فيها، فضلاً عن الاصطلاحات والمعارف المنطقية والفلسفية. والرازي يشير إلى كتاب المباحث في كثير من كتبه الأخرى: كالملخص، وشرحه على الإشارات والتنبيهات لابن سينا، ونهاية العقول، واعتقادات فرق المسلمين والمشركين، وشرح عيون الحكمة.
وفي مناظراته فيما وراء النهر يذكر أنه عندما ذهب إلى سمرقند سمع أن الناس يقرؤن عليه تصانيفه كالملخص وشرح الإشارات والمباحث المشرقية".
وكتاب "المباحث المشرقية" كتاب فلسفي. فمباحثه هي مباحث الفلسفة عموماً. وقد قسمه على كتب وأبواب وفصول. بحث الكتاب الأول في الأمور العامة.. وهو مبحث الوجود ولواحقه، أو ما بعد الطبيعة، وفي الكتاب الثاني في أحكام الجواهر والأعراض.. وهو مبحث الطبيعة.. وأما الكتاب الثالث فقد خصصه للإلهيات... وهو على صغر حجمه، فإنه يعتمد على مباحث الكتابين قبله..
والذي يبدو أن الرازي قد عاد وغير كثيراً من مواقفه فيه في كتبه التي تلته كالملخص وشرح الإشارات وشرح عيون الحكمة ونهاية العقول والمطالب العالية...
