والكتاب مرتب على قسمين: قسم يبحث عن الأصول الكلية لعلم الأخلاق، ويريد أن يكشف عن مرتبة الإنسان من مراتب الموجودات- فقسم الموجودات في ثلاثة تقاسيم من حيث الطبيعة والشهوة أولًا، ومن حيث الوجود والخلق ثانيًا، ومن حيث الكمال والنقصان ثالثًا- وجاءت محتويات هذا القسم في اثني عشر فصلًا، والقسم الثاني يشتمل على عشرة فصول، يبحث عن علاج ما يتعلق بالشهوة والنزوع، ومباحثه تتعلق بحب المال والجاه، وعلاج البخل، والكلام في الرياء ودرجات أهل الرياء، وشرح الطاعات البدنية وما يتعلق من الطاعات بالخلق.
