إن الموضوع الذي يدور عليه هذا الكتاب هو - كما يتجلّى في عنوانه - العزاء والرثاء: فقد ساق فيه مؤلفه مجموعة من عيون المرائي التي فاضت بها قرائح الفحول من الشعراء الجاهليين والإسلاميين والعباسيين الذين عاصروا المؤلف أو سبقوه، كما ساق فيه مواعظ وخطباً وأقوالاً مأثورة، ووصايا "يؤثر بعضها عن أهل الدين، وبعضها عن أهل الآداب والطبائع المحمودة".
ولم يسر المؤلف في ترتيب كتابه على منهج محدد، فهو يسوق الأشعار والأخبار دون ترتيب زماني أو مكاني، وإنما قسم الكتاب إلى أبواب شاملة، حيث عقد باباً لمرائي الجاهلية المشهورة المقدمة فذكر مرائي لمتمم بن نويرة ودريد بن الصمة وكعب بن سعد الغنوي، وأعشى باهلة وأوس بن حجر وأبي ذؤيب، وأبي خراش الهذليين وليلى الأخيلية ولخسناء..
كما ساق المبرد مع هذه الأشعار طائفة من التعازي النثرية البليغة والأخبار المستجادة المتصلة بالعزاء والرثاء، ثم عقد باباً للوصايا فذكر وصية أبي بكر عند موته ووصية عمر وعلي ومعاوية وأبي عبيدة بن الجراح، وعبد الملك بن مروان وأبي قيس بن صرمة الأنصاري والربيع بن خثيم والمهلب بن أبي صفرة.
ومضى بعد ذلك يسرد أخبار بعض من أصاب الموت أعزاءهم فتجلدوا أو جزعوا، أو الذين أوتوا الحكمة وحسن الخطاب فعرفوا كيف يخففون من وطأة الحزن عن الذين فجعهم الموت بمن يحبون، ثم عقد باباً لأشعار المحدثين فذكر مرائي لمسلم بن الوليد وإبراهيم بن المهدي وأبي العتاهية...
ثم عقد "باباً لمواعظ وتعاز وأشعار داخلة في ذلك موصولة به، وشغل هذا الباب الحيز الأكبر من الكتاب فذكر فيه كثيراً من أشعار الجاهليين والإسلاميين والعباسيين وأخبارهم وأخبار الطواعين وأخبار الجفاة عند الموت وبعض أيام العرب... وختم كتابه بمرئية في رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم.
