كتاب (التعازي والمراثي والوصايا) ظاهر في عنوانه، وهو أدب العزاء والرِّثاء ، ساق فيه المبرِّد مجموعة من عيون المراثي والمواعظ، وخطباً وأقوالاً مأثورة لبعض من حضرهم الموت، ووصايا متناقلة عن كثيرين مثل أبي بكر وعمر وعلي ومعاوية وأبي عبيدة بن الجراح رضي الله عنهم، واعتنى فيه بأخبارِ بعض من أصاب الموتُ أعزَّاءهم فتجلَّدوا أو جزعوا، والذين أوتوا الحكمةَ وحسْنَ الخطاب فعرفوا كيف يخففون من وطأة الحزن عن الذين فجعهم الموت بمن يحبون. وكان من أبرز صفحات هذا الكتاب ما نقله المبرِّد من أقوال الذين كابدوا لحظة الاحتضار؛ مغادرين الدنيا ومقبلين على الآخرة؛ فجاءت أقوالهم في غاية التأثير والتأثر. كما نقل أقوالَ بعض الجُفاة القُساة الذين حضرتهم الوفاة أمثال أبي جهل، والحجَّاج، وغيرهما، وماذا قالوا عند احتضارهم، وعنون لذلك بــ: باب الجفاة عند الموت.
