إن السرّ في أشعار البياتي يتجدد في كل قراءة لاحقة لقصائده، ورغم أن السلالات الشعرية تقوم على توارث هذه السرية، ونقلها عبر الأجيال برسائل خفية، فإن قصائد البياتي تتميز باكتمال دائرة أسرارها وتموضعها في مكان خاص في الشعرية العربية. هذه المختارات هي تركيب بسيط ومتاح في سياق ممتنع ينطوي على أعماق روحية، بتجربة حياتية استثنائية وبصورة تجمع بين الدين "والسحر" و"البهللة" بحسب مفهوم ابن عربي للبهللة واستحصالها وحكمتها.
في هذه المختارات يبرز غنى موضوعات البياتي والغنى المقصود هنا هو مستوى ريادتها، فثمة قصائد تعد رائدة فعلاً في الشعر العربي الحديث كما في قصيدة "مسافر بلا حقائب" التي تمثل وعياً متقدماً ومبكراً، أما قصيدة "المخبر" فهي الأنموذج الأول في القصيدة العربية التي تسعى إلى مقاربة صورة هذا الشخص الذي صار جزءاً من موضوعاتها الأساسية...
والهدف الذي ابتغاه "محمد مظلوم" من جمع هذه المختارات هو التأكيد على الجانب "الفني" والتنوع في هذه التجربة التي أسست بقوة لمشروع شعري متقدم، حاول فيها أن يقرأ "البياتي" الكبير برؤيا خاصة، لحداثة شعرية امتلكت شروطها الواضحة في المتن الشعري العربي.
