يعيد التعريف بالمواطنية كمشروع مدنيّ يطلّ من التاريخ مع تطوّر مضامينه وآليات تطبيقه، ويزدهر، من زاوية الجغرافيا السّياسية المعاصرة، في المجتمعات الديموقراطيّة الغربية بالتحديد مع تكريس مبدأي حريّة الإنتماء والمساواة في الحقوق.
ويبحث الكتاب في موقع لبنان، المجتمع المتعدّد الطوائف، من مشروع المواطنيّة. فأين نحن من الوطن الذي يجمع مواطنين متساوين، لا طوائف ومذاهب مختلفة؟ مظاهر أزمة المواطنيّة في المجتمع اللّبناني تتجلّى من خلال استطلاع دور عوامل إجتماعيّة عديدة ومنها المدرسة ومساهماتها في صياغة شعور الإنتماء الجماعي لدى اللّبنانيّين وتكوين الثقافة المواطنيّة لديهم.
ويخلص المؤلّف إلى تبنّي المقاربة العلمانية "كطوق نجاة" لمشروع المواطنيّة في لبنان، عبر الإصلاحات الواردة في الدستور وتعديل مواد تُعطي للطوائف ما يجب أن يكون للدولة… "وحتى حلول زمن العلمانيّة في لبنان، يبقى السّؤال عن بناء الوطن كبحث الوطن عن مواطنيه…".
