يعتبر كتاب "ألف ليلة وليلة" من أهم الكتب التراثية العربية، وهو إن لم يكن أهمّها بالنسبة غلينا نحن العرب، فهو أهمها بالنسبة إلى الأجانب، يدلك على ذلك كثرة ترجماته وطبعاته في اللغات الأجنبية وشدة اهتمام الباحثين والقرّاء الأجانب به، ومهما يكن من أمر أهميته، فهو أشهر مجموعة عربية قصصية تراثية على الإطلاق، وقد اهتم به المثقفون اهتماماً نادر النظير يدلك على ذلك كثرة طبعاته في مختلف العواصم العربية عبر أكثر من مئة وثمانين سنة.
والكتاب بالإضافة إلى قصصه الشائعة يتضمن ثروة شعرية مهمة، وهو إن لم يكن الكتاب الأول في التراث العربي من حيث ضخامة هذه الثروة الشعريّة، فهو أوّلها بدون شك من ناحية نوعية الأشعار التي يتضمنها، ذلك أنّ واضع أو واضعي قصص هذا الكتاب كانوا لا يتمثلون إلا بأفضل ما يحفظونه من الشعر العربي، لذلك أشعاره من عيون الشعر العربي.
ولكنها جاءت في طبعاته التجارية مشوهة فيها الكثير من التصحيف والتحريف، وتعتبر طبعة كلكتا الثانية والصادرة في الهند سنة 1831م من أفضل الطبعات بالنسبة إلى ضبط الأشعار وسلامتها من التصحيف، رغم كثرة الأخطاء فيها، ولذلك تم الاعتماد عليها في تحقيق مادة هذه الطبعة من ديوان كليلة ودمنة، وما الغاية من التحقيق سوى خدمة التراث العربي واطلاع القراء على ما جاء في هذا الكتاب من قصص هادفة وشيقة، وبالرجوع لعمل المحقق نجد أنه قد اهتم بـ: أولاً: صحح ما وجده مصحفاً في طبعة كلكتا، ثانياً: أشار إلى وزن كل مقطوعة أو قصيدة، ثالثاً: بوب كل القصائد والمقطوعات بحسب الرويّ، ثم رتب الأشعار ذات الرويّ الواحد بحسب الحركة، ثم رتب الأشعار ذات الروي الواحد، والحركة الواحدة بحسب البحور: الطويل أولاً، فالبسيط، فالوافر، فالكامل، فالسريع.
