الرب خلق الأدوية من الأرض والرجل الفطن لا يكرهها، إن العلي ألهم الناس العلم لكي يمجد في عجائبه بتلك يشفي ويزيل الأوجاع، ومنها يصنع العطار أمزجة وصنعته لا نهاية لها.
وكانت هذه المهنة مخصصة في قديم الزمان عند الكهنة الوثنيين عند المصريين وكذلك عند كهنة الهنود وكذلك عند فلاسفة اليونان في القرن الرابع والخامس قبل الميلاد ومنهم هيبوقراط وتيومراستوس وبيلينوس وكالينوس وصارت هذه المهنة تتقرب إلينا رويداً رويداً حتى جاء أطباء العرب وأخذوا عنهم وتوسعوا به حتى اشتهروا ومنهم ابن سينا والرازي وغيرهم كثيرون مثل ابن البيطار وداود بن أبي النصر وإبراهيم بن عبد الرحمن بن أبي بكر الأزرق وجلال الدين السيوطي وداود الأنطاكي وغيرهم كثيرون لا يحصى عددهم حتى أن الغرب أخذوا عنهم الشيء الكثير وقد درّسوا هذا الطب الذي أخذوه عن العرب مدة خمسمائة سنة في أكبر جامعاتهم كما اشتهر في الجيل الثاني عشر بهذه المهنة الرهبان والراهبات كما سبقهم كثيرون من القديسين نظير القديس لوقا وبنديلائيمون وقزما وارمولاوس ودميانوس واليان الحمصي وكيروس ورفيقه يوحنا، إذاً صناعة التطيب هي صناعة شريفة ولها قيمة إجتماعية عالية فإنها تشارك القدرة الفائقة الطبيعة بأفعالها.
