تعتبر الأمثال الشعبية الشائعة والمتداولة بين الناس، عند شعب من الشعوب بمثابة ذاكرته الحافظة ومستودع تفكير أفراده. وهي مخزن لكثير من عاداته وتقاليده، ونظرته في الحياة، وهي المعبّر عن أنماط سلوكه وأخلاقه وقيمه الاجتماعية والفكرية، وهي بالإضافة إلى ذلك وسيلة من الوسائل التي ترشد إلى مدى تطوره الحضاري والرقي العقلي لدى أمة من الأمم أو شعب من الشعوب، بوساطتها يمكن التعرف على رؤية شعب معين، في زمن معين ومكان معين، للحياة والوجود، كما يتم التعرف على نظرته للعلاقات المتشابكة بين الحاكم والمحكوم، والمرأة والرجل، والآباء والأبناء، ورجال الدين والسلطة، وكافة شؤون المال والاقتصاد والعمل والقضاء... الخ.
وفي الحقيقة فإنه لا شيء ينبئ عن روح الشعوب أكثر من أمثالها. وإذا ما تناقضت الأمثال بعضها مع البعض أو تعارضت أحياناً، فإنما يدل ذلك على غنى التجربة الإنسانية، حيث تستخلص كل جماعة من الناس العبرة والموعظة والحكمة من الأحداث، بحيث ثقافتها الخاصة بها، أو بحسب الأوضاع العينية المتغيرة باستمرار.
وفي هذا الكتاب طائفة من الأمثال التي تمّ جمعها من مصادر باللغة الإنكليزية ثم ليصار إلى ترجمتها ليطلع عليها قارئ العربية وقد بلغت تلك الأمثال في تعدادها حوالى 1500 مثلاً أو أكثر، وذلك لأكثر من 30 دولة من دول العالم المختلفة. وسيجد القارئ أن كثيراً من الأمثال متقاربة في معناها، وما ذلك إلا لأن الأمثال في النهاية تعكس حياة إنسانية واحدة لا تختلف كثيراً عن الأرض الواحدة التي نعيش عليها جميعاً، سواء في روسيا أو في الهند أو في جنوب أفريقيا.
