كتب ماركس "نقد برنامج غوتا" في عام 1875؛ وهذا البحث هو عبارة عن ملاحظات إنتقادية على مشروع برنامج حزب العمال الألماني الموحد المقبل، فقد كان المشروع يتضمن أخطاء خطيرة وتنازلات مبدئية في صالح اللاسالية.
وقد حبذ ماركس وانجلس واقع إنشاء حزب إشتراكي ألماني موحد، ولكنهما وقفاً ضد المساومة الفكرية مع اللاساليين وانتقداها إنتقاداً حاداً.
وفي الوقت نفسه، صاغ ماركس في هذا البحث جملة كاملة من الأفكار في القضايا الجدرية لنظرية الشيوعية العلمية: عن الثورة الإشتراكية، وديكتاتورية البروليتاريا، ومرحلة الإنتقال من الرأسمالية إلى الشيوعية، وطوري المجتمع الشيوعي، وإنتاج وتوزيع المنتوج الإجتماعي في ظل الإشتراكية، والسمات الأساسية للشيوعية، والأممية البروليتارية، وحزب الطبقة العاملة.
وفي هذا البحث خطا ماركس خطوة جديدة في تطوير مذهبه عن الدولة وعن ديكتاتورية البروليتاريا؛ وصاغ موضوعة هامة للغاية تقول أنه لا مناص تاريخياً من مرحلة خاصة للإنتقال من الرأسمالية إلى الشيوعية يناسبها شكل خاص للدولة هو شكل "الديكتاتورية الثورية للبروليتاريا".
