اعتاد المؤرخون العرب القدامى والمحدثون على كتابة مؤلفات في السير والتراجم للعصر الذي عاشوا فيه أو لعصور سابقة، ولكنهم قل ما تناولوا سير وتراجم لشخصيات من الأمم الأخرى. ولا شك أن في قراءة السير والتراجم متعة وعبراً ودروساً مفيدة، وهذا ما دفعني إلى نشر السير الواردة في هذا الكتاب.
كنت قد كتبت معظم هذه السير ونشرتها في مجلة الاقتصاد المعاصر لصاحبها الصديق الدكتور عبد الله المالكي بين سنتي 2002 و2008، وبعد أن توقفت المجلة عن الصدور، رأيت أن أجمعها وأضيف إليها سير شخصيات أخرى، وأنشرها في كتاب.
يتألف هذا الكتاب من خمسة فصول يحتوي الأول منها على سير شخصيات عربية وإسلامية ويحتوي الثاني على سير شخصيات آسيوية، بينما يشمل الثالث سير شخصيات إفريقية. أما الفصل الرابع فيتناول سير شخصيات أوروبية، ويدور الفصل الخامس حول عدد من سير شخصيات أمريكية شمالية وجنوبية ووسطى.
وقد حرصت على أن يكون معظم هذه الشخصيات من المؤثرين في بناء العالم الحديث المعاصر، وسعيت -من خلال هذه السير- إلى إلقاء أضواء على تاريخ العالم الحديث والمعاصر بعامة، وعلى القضايا والمشكلات الدولية بخاصة، تلك القضايا والمشكلات التي ما زال بعضها يشغل الساسة والمفكرين وعامة الناس في أيامنا الحاضرة. وحاولت، في عرضي لهذه السير، ما استطعت، أن ألتزم الحياد والموضوعية والابتعاد عن الهوى والعاطفة، وكلي أمل في أن أقدم للقارئ ما يمتعه ويفيده.
