إن جيلاً من الرجال قد عني بآثار المهدي وبذل في خدمتها خالص الجهد وصادق العناية، وبفضل هؤلاء جمعت هذه الآثار وانتشرت بين الناس على أيامهم. وقد بلغت حركة الجمع والتصنيف عندئذ مبلغاً عظيماً، ولولا جهد هؤلاء لضاع الكثير من كان بأيدي الناس من آثار. ومن هنا تبرز أهمية هذا الكتاب كمستودع لمادة تاريخية وكعمل ثقافي له جذوره ومردوده. وهو يتضمن مرشداً إلى وثائق المهدي ومرشداً آخر إلى مصنفات رسائل المهدي.
أما المرشد إلى الوثائق فأساسه المرشد الذي صدر عن دار الوثائق المركزية، القومية الآن، في 1969م. وقد أجري فيه تعديلات وتصويبات وإضافة المادة الجديدة التي تم الوقوف عليها بعد صدور المرشد. كذلك تحت مراجعة فهرس الأعلام والبلدان. وقد جاء متفقاً مع تسلسل كتاب الآثار الكاملة للإمام المهدي، وهذا ما يسهل الانتقال من ملخصات المرشد إلى النصوص الكاملة. أما المرشد إلى مصنفات الرسائل الذي تضمنه هذا الكتاب فهو يصدر لأول مرة، والهدف منه هو إعطاء الباحث إشارات وأفكار سريعة عن مصادره وليس إعطاء تقييم مفصل عنها. ولذا جاء العرض سريعاً.
