إن كمالات النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم لا تحصى, وشمائله لا تستقصى. فمهما مدحه صلى الله عليه وسلم المادحون, ووصفه الواصفون, فإنهم مقصرون عما هنالك من شرفه عليه الصلاة والسلام, كيف لا وقد وصفه الله تعالى بقوله: إنك لعلى خلق عظيم. فلو بالغ الأولون والآخرون في إحصاء مناقبه صلى الله عليه وسلم لما استطاعوا الوصول الى ما ذكره الله تعالى في كتبه السماوية, فكل علو في حقه عليه السلام تقصير, ولا يبلغ البليغ في مدحه إلا القليل من الكثير. وقد كان سبب نظم الإمام البوصيري لهذه القصيدة: أنه أصابه خلط فالج عجز عن علاجه كل معالج, أذ أبطل نصفه وتحير فيه وصفه. فلما أيس من نفسه وقاربت حلول رمسه, تذكر في ساعة سعيدة أن يصوغ قصيدة في مدح خير البرية عليه السلام, فصح العزم والنية, وشرع في امتداح النبي عليه السلام, ورجا به البرء والشفاء, فأعانه الله ويسر عليه طلبه, فلما ختمها رأى في منامه المصطفى عليه السلام قد أتى إليه ومر بيده المباركة عليه, فعوفي لوقته وعاد لما كان عليه. وقد سميت بالبردة لأن الإمام رأى النبي عليه السلام في منامه فمسح بيده الشريفة عليه, ولفه في بردته- زيادة على ما مر آنفاً- فبرىء لوقته.
