يكشف هذا الكتاب أحداث الصراع الذي أحتدم بين الأسلام ومناوئية عندما ظهرت الدعوة الى الأسلام وبإلقاء الضوء على الدور الذي شارك فية الشعر في ذلك الصراع , حيث توزع هذا الكتاب على ستة فصول يتصدرها الفصل الأول وأن ينفرد بالدراسات السابقة لبعض جوانب الفترة وبموقف الأسلام من الشعر والشعراء وتناول الفصل الثاني دراسة ظاهرتي : الأنحلال والأختلاط في شعر الصراع وتخصص الفصل الثالث بدراسة الجهد الأدبي لشعراء المسلمين وتفرد الفصل الرابع بالنتاج الشعري لشعراء المشركين المكيين وعرض الفصل الخامس ماصدر من شعراء القبائل وشعراء اليهود وما قالوه من شعر مناوئ للأسلام أو مؤيد لة أما الفصل السادس فقد عني بدراسة الملامح الأدبية العامة لشعر الصراع وشفع هذا الفصل بخاتمة , تضمنت أهم النتائج التي توصل اليها الكاتب في بحثه هذا
