استمر المسلمون منذ وفاة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم وحتى اليوم يرصدون حركة التاريخ بعين واحدة. هي عين القداسة دون أن ينظروا إليها بعين النقد. ومنبع هذه النظرة يكمن في تلك الأغلال السلفية التي طوق بها المسلمون والتي تحول دون رؤيتهم لحركة التاريخ بصورة متكاملة بمعزل عن القداسة التي أضيفت على رموز وشخصيات معينة لعبت دوراً بارزاً في دائرة هذه الحركة. استدعى ذلك من الباحث هذه الدراسة والتي حاول من خلالها إعادة كتابة التاريخ الإسلامي وإعادة قراءته من جديد حيث أن هذا التاريخ قد صبغته السياسة وطغى فيه الرجال على النصوص وتغلبت فيه النزعات على القيم الإسلامية. والباحث لا يهدف في دراسته هذه إلى التجريح أو الطعن والتشويه وهدم رموز معينة هي محل قداسة المسلمين، ولكن هدفه هو وضع النصوص فوق الرجال ثم وزن هؤلاء الرجال على ضوء هذه النصوص. ومن ثم إرساء قاعدة تعين على قراءة التاريخ قراءة متبصرة من خلال النصوص لا من خلال الرجال. هذا وإن البحث في وقائع التاريخ يجب أن تكون له دلالاته الواقعية، وما طرحه الباحث في دراسته هذه إنما له انعكاساته على واقع الأمة الإسلامية وما يعايشه المسلمون من خلال واقع الإسلاميين والفكر الإسلامي بصورة عامة. وما يجب أن يدركه الذين يتصدون لأمر الدعوة والتوجيه في الميدان الإسلامي أن فقه حركة التاريخ مقدمة ضرورة لفقه الإسلام، وأن فقه الماضي مقدمة لفقه الحاضر. ومن الماضي إلى الحاضر كانت رحلة هذا الكتاب الذي أراده مؤلفه أن يكون خطوة على طريق تحرير العقل المسلم من أغلال الماضي.
