يأتي هذا الكتاب ليلبي الحاجة الماسة التي يشعر بها كل باحث في التاريخ العسكري المملوكي، من أجل الوقوف على تفسير مئات المصطلحات والمفاهيم في ثنايا مصادر تلك الفترة التي استقرت فيها النظم الإدارية والعسكرية الإسلامية.
وقد جمع المؤلف مادته من خلال قراءة المصادر وجمع المادة العلمية وتتبع ورود المصطلحات بدءاً من الموسوعات والمصنفات الإدارية، مروراً بالمعاجم القديمة والحديثة والمصنفات العسكرية الإسلامية المتاحة، وإنتهاءً بالدراسات الحديثة المهتمة بهذا الجانب من تاريخ المماليك، وقد سبر غور حوليات التاريخ وكتب التراجم والسير.
مما جعل عدد المصطلحات في هذا المعجم يزداد ليصل إلى (1806) مصطلحات، شملت الجوانب التالية: الرتب العسكرية، وإمتيازاتها المادية والمعنوية، الوظائف السياسية والعسكرية والإدارية للأمراء من أرباب السيوف، ألقاب الأمراء من أرباب السيوف، أسماء الأمراء والمماليك ومدلولاتها، فئات المماليك السلطانية ووظائفها المختلفة، طوائف المماليك السلطانية ووظائفها المختلفة، طوائف المماليك السلطانية المنسوبة للسلاطين، الملابس العسكرية، فئات مماليك الأمراء وطوائفها، فرق الجيش المملوكي وتقسيماتها، إقطاعات الجيش والوثائق المتعلقة بها، الفرق المحلية المساندة للجيش المملوكي ووظائفها، الأسلحة وآلات الحصار... إلخ.
