لا يقدر مكانة جرجي زيدان إلا من اطلع على آثاره في الأدب والتاريخ، فمن يطالع كتبه ويطالع كتب المؤرخين قبله لا يسعه إلا الاعتراف بفضله. وهو إضافة إلى ذلك صحفي يشهد له الآخرون بطول الباع في فن الصحافة وهو قصصي بارع يرتب القصة بشكل أخاذ مدهش.
ولد جرجي زيدان في بيروت بتاريخ 14 كانون الأول عام 1861 وتلقى تعليمه في مدرسة المعلم الياس ومدرسة الشوام ودرس الطب، لكنه اضطر إلى مغادرة كلية الطب، فانصرف إلى الأدب وتولى سنة 1884 تحرير جريدة "الزمان".
في هذا الكتاب يستعرض المؤلف سيرة حياة جرجي زيدان منذ ولادته ونشأته، وتحصيله العلم، وعمله في التحرير والصحافة حتى وفاته. كما يستعرض المؤلف كتب زيدان وآثاره عارضاً لأهم ما تضمنته مبيناً قيمتها الفنية والأدبية. كما يضم الكتاب كلمات وخطب وقصائد لأدباء مرموقين ألقيت بمناسبة وفاته.
