يحتل الطب النفسي في عالم اليوم مكان الصدارة بين العلوم الطبية والصحية، إذ يستأثر بالكثير من الموارد التي يخصصها المجتمع لمجمل الخدمات الطبية الأساسية. ونظراً لازدياد المصطلحات الطبية المتداولة في هذا الطب عنى المعجّم لطفي الشربيني بوضع هذا المعجم المزدوج اللغة (إنجليزي-عربي). والذي يتضمن شرحاً لمعاني المصطلحات النفسية والألفاظ التي لوحظ زيادة استخدامها في المراجع الأجنبية من كتب ودوريات ونشرات حيث يضم هذا القاموس مفردات وكلمات ومصطلحات متنوعة يجمع بينها علاقتها بتخصيص الطب النفسي وشيوع استخدامها في الكتابة العربية من موضوعات الطب النفسي، أو مصادفتها أثناء الترجمة في الإنجليزية إلى العربية، والمادة التي يحتويها هذا القاموس تمتد إلى الموضوعات الطبية وموضوعات علم النفس والعلوم الأخرى ذات الصلة بالطب النفسي.
واللافت في هذا المعجم هو تضمنه لأهم أسماء الأدوية الشائعة الاستخدام في الدول العربية، وكذلك أسماء بعض الشخصيات الهامة في هذا العلم كما وتضمن المعجم ملاحق مفصلة بأسماء الأدوية النفسية والتصنيفات المعاصرة للاضطرابات النفسية، وما يميز هذا المعجم أيضاً أنه يجمع بين القاموس الذي يقدم الترجمة العربية الواضحة وبين الموسوعة التي تقدم معلومات مبسطة مختصرة عن المصطلحات والألفاظ التي يضمّها هذا المرجع.
