إن ما بذله علماء المسلمين من الجهود في علم معرفة الرجال بخاصة شيء يفوق الوصف. وأساس نشأة هذا الفن هو خدمة السنة النبوية المشرفة لمعرفة الموثق وغير الموثق من رواة الحديث الشريف، ثم تشعبت طرقه وفنونه وكثر التأليف فيه. ومن فنون معرفة الرجال وذكر سيرهم وأخبارهم كتب (طبقات الفقهاء) على اختلاف مذاهبهم ونحلهم. وكتاب المقص الأرشد في ذكر أصحاب الإمام أحمد واحد من هذه الكتب وقد اختاره المحقق وعمل فيه لاستيفاء البحث عن علماء الحنابلة وتخريج تراجمهم التي فات كتب التراجم من علماء المذهب شيئاً كثيراً في المشيخات والسلسلات والإجازات وغيرها من تراجم الرجال والتعريف بهم فات كل من كتب في الطبقات ذلك. فجاء عمله سداً لهذا النقص في تراجم وسير علماء الحنابلة. وقد جاء عمله ضمن منهاج علمي يخدم غرض التحقيق.
