لمّا كانت الحاجة مُلحّة لتدوين تراجم علماء الإسلام، ومعرفة منازلهم وطبقاتهم، لِمَا في ذلك من أهمية كبيرة لكلٍّ من المُحدّث والفقيه؛ فقد انبرى العلماء للقيام بهذا الواجب، فوضعوا الكتب المُصنّفة المُرتّبة في هذا الشأن، وكتابنا هذا من ضمن هذه الكتب، بل في مقدمتها على الإطلاق؛ حيث يُعدّ أول كتاب يُؤلَّف في تراجم مذهبٍ بعينه؛ إذ جمع فيه صاحبه تراجم رواة المسائل عن الإمام أحمد رحمه الله، فكانت كلّ ترجمة مشتملة على اسم المترجَم، ونسبته، والثناء عليه، وما ذُكر فيه من جرحٍ وتعديلٍ، ووصف لمسائله المرويّة؛ من حيث الجودة والحجم، وطريق المصنف في روايتها، وغير ذلك.
