ذكر الطاعنون بالسن من أهل هذا الزمان: أن الناس من سكان القرى والضياع في سوريا ولبنان وفلسطين وشرق الأردن كانت عاداتهم فيما مضى أيام الأعياد والأعراس وسائر أيام التهاني أن يقف الكثير من شبانهم وكهولهم وقت المراسح في الساحات ويعملوا صفاً أعوجاً شبه الحلقة ويأخذ أحدهم بيد الثاني منتظمين جنباً لجنب وكتفاً لكتف ثم يأتي أحد الشعراء القوالين ذوي الخبرة في إنشاء الزجل وإنشاه وارتجاله عند اللزوم فيقف على الطرف الأيمن من الصف المعروف عند الشباب بالحاشية ويأتي رجل آخر من صنفه عند ذكى وارتجال ومعرفة بفنون الزجل فيقف على الطرف الآخر ويبتدئ أحدهما بما يحضره من القول في موضوع من المواضيع المناسبة للمقام فيجاوبه الآخر على حسب الاستعداد والكل منهم يمشون في تلك الحال رويداً رويداً مشياً مرتباً لهاتيك الأنغام بخلاف المتعارف عند أهل هذا الزمن في أعيادهم وأعراسهم من التغني بدلعونا وميجانا وموليا وما أششبه ذلك وشدة الحماس وكثرة الضجيج ورفع الأرجل وضربها في الأرض بقوة وسرعة واستعمال الأرغل والشبابة وعلى كل حال: لكل زمان دولة ورجال. وهذا الكتيب الذي بين أيدينا جاء خصيصاً ليلقي الضوء وليمسح غبار الزمن عن قصة القوالة أو المناظرة التي حدثت بين محمد حداثا وداود كرم كما ويحتوي الكتيب أيضاً على قصيدة محمد الملحم الإعرابي المشهور وعلى قصة وضحا الحزينة ليوسف حاتم.
