كان لبنان ومنذ نشأته أرضاً خصبة لأحداث اجتماعية وسياسية طبعت تاريخه الحديث والمعاصر بالطابع التصادمي العنيف تارة، وبشيء من الهدوء والعلاقات الطبيعية حيناً آخر. وقد شهد القرن التاسع عشر، صراعات وانقسامات سياسية تركت آثارها سلباً أو إيجاباً على النظام الإقطاعي ما أوصل البلاد إلى أحوال قاسية ما انعكس على أحوال الفلاحين الذين حاولوا التحرك والثورة للمطالبة برفع الظلم والتعديات عنهم.
وفي هذا الكتاب يعرض المؤلف لأحداث القرن التاسع عشر مركزاً على النقاط الأساسية التي تحكمت بالمسار التاريخي للواقع اللبناني وهو يعرض هذه الحقائق بأسلوب يبرز أهميتها ويؤدي إلى تحليلها وتوضيح غوامضها وظروفها ضمن سياق التسلسل التاريخي والمؤلف يتوخى الدقة في سرد الوقائع رغم ما في ذلك من صعوبة بالغة. والنصوص والوثائق التي يعمد المؤلف إلى تحليلها مأخوذة من المؤرخين المعاصرين لتلك الأحداث.
