هذا الكتاب صفة جزيرة الأندلس منتخبة من كتاب الروض المعطار في خبر الأقطار لأبي عبد الله الحميري، وهو معجم جغرافي تأريخي جمعه مؤلفه سنة 866ه ، وعني بتحقيقه وتصحيحه"إ. لافي بروفنصال" / استاذ تاريخ المغرب العربي بجامعة الجزائر سنة 1408ه – 1988م. بالإستناد إلى عدد من المخطوطات التي ورد فيها صفة الجزيرة الأندلسية عند المعطار والتي ذكر فيها كورها وثغورها ومدنها وأقاليمها، والبلاد النصرانية المصاقبة لها، وما اشتهر بها من العجائب، والوقائع والأخبار.
وفي الكتاب يذكر الحميري الهدف من وضع الكتاب، وهو: ذكر المواضع المشهورة عند الناس من العربية والعجمية، والأصقاع التي تعلقت بها قصة، أو كان في ذكرها فائدة، أو كلام فيه حكمة، أو لها خبر طريف، أو معنى يُستملح أو يستغرب ويحسن إيراده. أما ما كان غريباً عند الناس، ولم يتعلق بذكره فائدة، فلم – يذكره المؤلف – بل اقتصر : على المشهور من البقاع وما في ذكره فائدة ... ورتبه على حروف المعجم، فجاء محتوياً على فنين مختلفين: أحدهما ذكر الأقطار والجهات، وما اشتملت عليه من النعوت والصفات؛ وثانيها الأخبار والوقائع والمعاني المختلفة بها؛ وفيها ايضاً الخبر عن الأصقاع مما يَحسُن إيراده، ويلذ سماعه من خبر طريف، أو وصف يستغرب أو يستملح، فجاء الكتاب مبهجاً للنفوس المتشوقة، ومذهباً للأفكار المُحرقة؛ مؤنساً لمن استولى عليه الإنفراد ورغب عن معاشرة الناس ...
وعليه، فمن أراد أن يعرف تاريخ الأندلس وناسها وعلومها وفنونها وآدابها، على مرّ التاريخ الإنساني، فإن هذا الكتاب جامعٌ لكل هذا وذاك، ورحلة في الزمان والمكان والوقائع والشخوص، يستحق القراءة.
