إنى قصدت فى هذا المجموع ذكر المواضع المشهورة عند الناس من العربية والعجمية، والأصقاع التى تعلقت بها قصة، أو كان فى ذكرها فائدة، أو كلام فيه حكمة، أو لها خبر ظريف، أو معنى يستملح أو يستغرب ويحسن إيراده، أما ما كان غريباً عند الناس، ولم يتعلق بذكره فائدة، ولا له خبر يحسن إيراده، فلا ألم بذكره، ولا أتعرض له غالباً استغناءً عنه واستثقالاً لذكره؛ ولو ذهبت إلى إيراد المواضع والبقاع على الاستقصاء لطال الكتاب، وقل إمتاعه؛ فاقتصرت لذلك على المشهور من البقاع وما فى ذكره فائدة ونكتفى عما سوى ذلك، ورتبته على حروف المعجم لما فى ذلك من الإحماض المرغوب فيه، ولما فيه من سرعة هجوم الطالب على اسم الموضع الخاص من غير تكلف عناء ولا تجثم تعب؛ فقد صار هذا الكتاب محتوياً على فنين مختلفين: أحدهما ذكر الأقطار والجهات، وما اشتملت عليه من النعوت والصفات؛ وثانيها الأخبار والوقائع والمعانى المختلفة بها، الصادرة عن مجتليها؛ واختلست ذلك ساعات زمانى، وجعلته فكاهة نفسى؛ وأنصبت فيه فكرى وبدنى؛ ورُضته حتى انقاد للعمل، وجاء حسب الأصل، فأصبح طارداً للهموم، ملقيا للغموم، وشاهداً بقدرة القيوم؛ مغنيا عن مؤانسة الصحب، منبها على حكمة الرب؛ باعثاً على الأعتبار، مستحضراً لخصائص الأقطار؛ مشيراً لآثار الأمم وأحداثها، مشيراً إلى وقائع الأخبار وأنبائها.
