إن الرمزية ليست مذهباً أدبياً محدد القسمات والأبعاد، بقدر ما هي حركة أدبية رحبة الأفق، عميقة الجذور، وارفة الظلال، لا تتغير بزمان ومكان معينين، ولا غرو، فقد تحدرت من الرومنطيقية وانبثقت حزمة أضواء، وقافلة ألوان، اتخذت مساراً جديداً وطعماً آخر، دون أن تفقد منطلقها الفني، ونهجها الرومنطيقي الأصيل، هذه الرمزية أبدعت نتاجاً أدبياً ثرا، تنوعت أساليبه وخصبت تربته، فجاءت بالكثير من الموضوعات والأسماء والأجواء، وإذا بالأدب العربي الحديث أكثر التفاتاً، وأعمق تجاوباً مع هذا المذهب الغربي، حتى أمسى هذا الأدب في فترة ما بين الحربين.
وبعد ذلك يمارس إبداعاً رمزياً أصيلاً، لا أثر فيه للتقليد أو التبعية، وكأن العرب كانوا هم أصحاب هذا المذهب ودعاته ومنظروه، لذا فقد اتسع كلام الباحث في هذا الكتاب، وتعمق أوطال بعض الشيء، ليشتمل على جذور الرمزية، ومناخاتها الفكرية، والاجتماعية العامة، وطبيعتها وقسماتها، ومن ثم قواعدها ومقوماتها وخصائصها، وما يرتبط بذلك كله من عرض وتحليل ونقد معتمداً الباحث لهذه الغاية أسلوب العرض الموضوعي، والتحليلي الأدبي المشفوع من حين لآخر، بالنظرة والدراسة الشخصيتين.
هذا في القسم الأول الذي ضم في خاتمته فصلاً مطولاً عن مختارات من الشعر الرمزي الأوروبي، أما القسم الثاني في هذا الكتاب، وهو الأطول، فقد استرسل فيه الكلام، واندفع القلم وراء نتاج الأدب العربي، قديمه وحديثه، فعرض الباحث من خلاله انعكاسات هذا المذهب وألمح إلى الكثير من آثاره مترسماً خطوطه العريضة للوصول إلى خلاصات ونتائج ليست جديدة كل الجدّة، ولكنها واثقة الخطى، خالصة الانتماء إلى صاحبها.
