حظي الحديث الشريف بعناية المسلمين، لكونه المصدر الثاني من مصادر الدين، فأقبلوا عليه حفظاص واستظهاراً، ولم يدعو قولاً للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، أو فعلاً، أو وصفاً، أو تصرفاً في شؤون الحياة إلا قيدوه، واهتموا بدراسته، ووضعوا فيه المصنفات المتنوعة من موطآت، ومسانيد، وسنن، وجوامع، ومستخرجات، ومستدركات وأجزاء... تشكل بمجموعها ثروة هائلة، وتراثاً غنياً قدمه السلف الصالح لمن جاء بعده.
لكن الباحث في هذه المصنفات يبذل الجهود المضنية، والأوقات الطويلة ليحصل على طلبه منها، وما ذلك بسبب عسر تأليفها –فإن سلفنا الصالح بذل غاية جهده في حسن تبويبها- ولكن بسبب ابتعاد الخلف عن منهج السلف، وجهله بطرائق تصنيف هذه الكتب. وقد مست الحاجة إلى تسهيل الوصول إلى هذه المصنفات، وتذليل الرجوع، إليها وذلك بوضع الفهارس العلمية لها.
ويأتي هذا الفهرس كحلقة من حلقات هذه السلسلة، و قد اعتمدت في وضعه على الطبعة لوحيدة للكتاب التي حققها الأستاذ محمد عبد الرزاق حمزة مدير دار الحديث بمكة المكرمة، والمدرس بالحرم المكي الشريف، وهي تقع في (680) صفحة من القطع المتوسط، وتشتمل على (2647) حديثاً.
يحتوي هذا الكتاب على ثلاثة فهارس: الأول لأسماء الكتب على حروف المعجم، والثاني لأوائل الأحاديث والآثار على حروف المعجم، والثالث لمسانيد الصحابة ومرويات التابعين مرتبة أسماؤهم على حروف المعجم أيضاً، جمعت تحت اسم كل واحد مروياته وذكرت أرقام أحاديثها. وقد اعتمد في تنظيم هذا الفهرس (النظام الألفبائي الكلمي) الذي تعتبر فيه حروف الكلمة الواحدة كوحدة مستقلة.
