في كتابه هذا، يجمع الدكتور حسين عطوان ما بقي من شعر الحسين بن مطير الأسدي (توفي سنة 170هـ) شاعر مخضرم عاش في الدولة الأموية، وعاصر الدولة العباسية، وأخباره قليلة نادرة لا تُكون صورة واضحة لحياته.
وفي هذا العمل يعرض المؤلف ما عثر عليه من شعره، ويضم كل ما رجح أنه من أصل قصيدة واحدة بعضه إلى بعض، ورتبه، وكون منه - أي من شعره - قصائد، يبدو بعضها كاملاً وافياً، ثم وزع ما جمع منه على القوافي، وخرَّج كل قصيدة، وقسم المجموع بين قسمين: قسم هو الشعر الصحيح الذي لا خلاف في نسبته إليه، وهو يشكل أكثر من ما جُمع من شعره، وقسم آخر هو ما يُغزى إليه وإلى غيره من الشعراء.
وعن موضوعات شعر الحسين بن مطير الأسدي، رأى المؤلف أنها: المديح والرثاء والوصف والغزل والحكمة، أما المديح فلا تختلف معانيه عنده عنها عند الشعراء العباسيين، إذ يردد شاعرنا في مدحه للمُهدي المعاني القديمة، والمعاني الجديدة، التي طالما رددها الشعراء... من الجود الغامر، وعلو الهمة، وحسن القيادة، وسعة الصدر، وكرم الأخلاق، مع العفة والجلال والمهابة... وتتصف الأبيات عنده بالتلاعب بالألفاظ، والإفتتان في الصياغة والسعي وراء المعنى الطريف وفيها بعض المبالغة...
وليس فيما بقي من شعره إلا قصيدة واحدة في الرثاء، وهي المرثية العينية التي رثى بها معن بن زائدة الشيباني، وهي بحق واحدة من المراثي الجيدة، التي نوه القدماء بها إستحساناً لها... وغزله كثير بالقياس إلى موضوعات شعره الأخرى، ويتصف بقوة الآسر، وجزالة الألفاظ، وحرارة العاطفة وتدفقها.
أما شعر الحكمة عنده فأشبه بأن يكون تفكراً في أحداث الدهر، وتغير الأحوال وتبدُّلها، مع إستخلاص العظة منها، وإسداء النصح بها، والدعوة إلى الخير والمعروف...
