الحسين بن الضحاك شاعر عباسي مشهور وهو بصري النشأة وأصله من خراسان وقد سمي بالخليع لكثرة مجونه وخلاعاته. جالس الخلفاء العباسيين وله فيهم أماديح وعرف بدماثة الخلق ورقة الطبع وكمال الظرف. وله أشعار كثيرة. فهو أحد المفتنين في الشعر، جيد المدح، جيد الغزل جيد الهجو، كثير المجون. وتمتاز لغته بفصاحة ألفاظها وسلامة باختيار اللفظ المناسب الموحي وحشد الصور الشعرية الملائمة.
وهذا الديوان يضم بعض شعره إذ إن هناك الكثير من شعره لم يصل إلينا.
وقد عمد المحقق إلى المصادر المطبوعة والمخطوط التي ظهرت أو اكتشفت في العقود الأربعة الماضية، فجمع منها ما استطاع من شعره ورتبه وفق القوافي على حروف المعجم ووضع لكل قصيدة أو قطعة رقماً لتسهيل التخريج وجعله في قسمين الأول ما صح عنده من شعره، والثاني ما نسب إليه وإلى غيره من الشعراء، وكتب له مقدمة موجزة تناولت حياته وعصره وشاعريته ومذهبه.
