أخذت مسألة عبد الله بن سبأ بعداً بين المذاهب الإسلامية أكثر من كونه رجلاً يهودياً كان له أثر في أحداث الفتنة التي وقعت في زمن عثمان بن عفان، بل صارت لهذا الرجل أهمية لم تنلها كثير من الشخصيات التي كان لها دور في التاريخ الإسلامي، فألفت فيه مؤلفات كتبها كتاب ومؤلفون من الشيعة وأهل السنة بين ناف له ومثبت.
إن هذه الأهمية لعبد الله بن سبأ نشأت بسبب أن الأصابع أشارت إليه على أنه مثير الفتنة في زمن عثمان والمرك الأول للأحداث التي تمخض عنها قتل الخليفة، وماثلاً ذلك من فترة وحروب راح ضحية فيها الآلاف من الصحابة والتابعين. مضافاً إلى أن أعداء الشيعة ذهبوا إلى عبد الله بن سبأ اليهودي هو المؤسس الحقيقي لمذهب الشيعة وباذر البذرة الأولى لمعتقداتهم، كمسألة الرجعة والوصاية لأمير المؤمنين عليه السلام وغيرها. فهل أن عبد الله بن سبأ حقيقة أو خرافة؟ وهل كان له دور في أحداث الفتنة؟ وهل هو حقاً مؤسس مذهب الشيعة الأمامية؟ وما هي علاقة مذهب الشيعة به؟ وهل هناك تشابه بين عقائد الشيعة وعقائد اليهود. وهذا ما سيوضحه الشيخ علي آل محسن في بحوث دراسة التحليلة التي بين يدينا والمعنونة بـ "عبد الله بن سبأ".
