لم يذكر أحد ممن ترجم لابن دريد قديماً وحديثاً هذا الكتاب ضمن مؤلفاته فلعل كتابنا هذا يمثل جزءاً من تلك الأجزاء الستين التي أدخلها القالي من أخبار ابن دريد إلى الأندلس أو لعله أحد جزأي الأخبار والإنشادات إذ أن نسختنا تتضمن أخباراً وإنشادات مغربلة منتقاة. ومع هذا يمكننا أن نطمئن إلى صحة نسبة الكتاب إلى ابن دريد إذا أخذنا بعين الاعتبار أن النسخة الخطية الوحيدة تحمل نسبتها صراحة إلى ابن دريد. الراوي الأول للكتاب هو أبو مسلم محمد بن أحمد بن علي البغدادي الكاتب وهو من تلامذة ابن دريد. يلاحظ بوضوح أن ابن دريد يروي عن شيوخه المعرفين عبد الرحمن ابن أخي الأصمعي وأبي حاتم السجستاني والأشنانداني والحسن بن خضر وعبد الأول بن مريد. في الكتاب أخبار وردت بنصها وسندها في أمالي القالي. بعض هذه الأخبار مروي بنصه وسنده في التعليق من أمالي ابن دريد.
