منذ ظهور الرواية الحديثة تناءت مفاهيم السرد عن العرافة والنبوءة، حتى أصبحت تستكمل حضورها لغة وتتجسد وضعاً مدوناً معنياً بالإنسان والمخلوقات أو بالطبيعة ذاتها. وجمعة اللامي هو واحد الذين تعمق إحساسهم بالواقع الذي عاشه مثقفاً وأديباً مناضلاً، وهو الذي يقع أديباً بين نزعات الغوص النفسي لجماعات الخمسينيات، وبينهم وبين الواقعيين الاجتماعيين. جاء إلى القصة بعدة الغريب الذي تصوف فاشتاق إلى الرؤيا. أبطاله رفاق درب سقطوا صرعى وآخرون رسم لكل منهم صورة. الأماكن عنده لا تكتب دورها وقيمتها الحضورية إلا من خلال أصحابها، فالشخص هو الذي يمنح المكان طاقته ويحرك إمكانياته.
يتألف هذا الكتاب الذي يضم أعماله القصصية من ثلاث مجموعات (من قتل حكمة الشامي، اليشن، الثلاثيات). المجموعة الأولى تضم قصصاً لكتبها المؤلف عندما كان سجيناً في سجن الحلة المركزي بالعراق، استلهم في بعضها شعار الحزب الشيوعي العراقي (وطن حر وشعب سعيد)، وهذه القصص تتميز تبعد الأصوات، وهي تتمسرح على أرض القرية ويظهر فيها الشحاذ حاملاً لرؤيا المخبولين والعرافيين.
وفي تعريفه "لليشن" والذي هو عنوان كتابه الثاني قال الكاتب: "إنه اسم مدينة اكتشفتها في خرائطي الشخصية قبل أعوام، تقع جنوب محافظة ميسان، ومن الممكن إيجادها بسهولة إذا حاولتم اكتشاف خرائطكم الشخصية من دون خجل أو خوف". وبالعودة لمضمون هذا الكتاب نجد أنه عبارة عن سيرة شخصية لمدينة اخترعها الكاتب.
أما الثلاثيات، فقد عني الكاتب فيها بناء الشخوص وظهورهم في الحياة العراقية وخفوتهم عندما تزداد الغمة وتمتلئ الدنيا جواراً. والثلاثيات كأنها سيرة موضوعية، إذ يتميز الأبطال بعدم الخوف والشجاعة. إن الباحث عن القصة والرواية بتمارينها المعروفة في البناء والتسلسل والحبكة قد لا يجد ضالته ومنشودة في كتابات اللامي، لأنها تعطي نفسها بسهولة لمن جاءها بعدة أخرى، تجاوزيه ومتسامية. وكتاباته بكر، لأنها لم تبن على أرض سابقه.
